The early months have seen our chapter host Beaver Trapping, a Bunny Hunt, and an Ice Fishing Event.
The annual KAMO Indianhead Chapter Beaver Trapping Event held on March 20, 2010 was again a huge success. With a sunny sky and temperatures in the low 30s, the KAMO KIDS and Mentors headed out for a lesson about trapping beavers. Joe Flater and Rob Nelson set over two dozen beaver traps in three different locations, and at least one beaver was harvested at each site. Seven beavers (and one muskrat) harvested ranged in size from 8 lbs to 42 lbs. Joe explained to the KAMO KIDS that the Beaver Hut shown would probably contain three generations, due to it‘s size. Some 12 to 15 beavers could be expected to live in each house. Joe also talked to the KIDS about the market for pelts, and indicated pelts should currently bring approximately $10 for the muskrat, and $10 to $35 for the beavers; size being a dominant factor. The KAMO KIDS attend schools in Ladysmith, Flambeau, Bruce, and Holcombe. A special thanks to Joe Flater and Rob Nelson for sharing this event with the KAMO Kids. In the first picture left to right, the two men in front of the group atop the beaver house are Joe Flater and Rob Nelson. The KAMO KIDS in the next picture are Justin, Brandon, Jim, Josiah, Donnie, John, Joe, Sam, and Anthony. The last picture shows Joe skinning one of the beavers.
A happy group, the Kids and Mentors assured that the Bunny Hunt went very well on February 20th, 2010. There were four rabbits harvested, good shooting as the dogs moved the rabbits around all day. Nice temperature and snow, perfect for hunting. We counted at least 27 people at the meal following the hunt. The meal was low-key, and included fried rabbit, venison stew, venison chili and crackers, home-made bread, brownies and drinks.
Pictured left to right are Jon, Kevin and Joe, Mentor Jim with Evan, Noah and Mira, Ruth with a nice crappie, Elijah with a just-caught Crappie, and although it appears that Mentor Nick is praying for a bite, he's actually demonstrating a technique for baiting a minnow. Around 1:00 P.M., after fishing, everyone enjoyed some lunch (someone's famous stew) at the home of Ralph Heuschele. |
