Upcoming Events & Activities

Our annual youth pheasant hunt will be held on Saturday, October 12th at Shady Game Farm, just north of Florence, follow the signs from 2nd Crossing Road. Registration begins at 8:30am, lunch will be at 12:00pm. Please plan to pick children up by 1:00pm. This is for kids ages 10-17 and hunter safety is required.

The pheasant hunt is a free event and everything is provided by Kids and Mentors Outdoors, including lunch. Please wear a hunter orange hat and jacket/vest if you have one, or let us know if we need to provide one for you. We talk about gun handling and safety and then each participant goes through a round of clay shooting with mentors before heading into the field. Each bird is planted right before, and kids go out one at a time with a mentor, a dog, and the dog handler. We wrap up the day with lunch and open clay shooting for those who want to shoot more, and a bird cleaning demonstration.

See below for pictures and drone footage from 2023!

Past Events & Activities

Hooked on Fishing

On Saturday July 13th the Kids and Mentors Outdoors Northwoods Chapter hosted our annual Hooked on Fishing outing at Lake Emily! This year we had the pleasure of taking 34 kids out, and enjoyed lots of catches and smiles all around – even some first timers with their first catches! We had a great group of children, volunteers, and guardians for another successful event!

A special thanks to our grill masters who served up a wonderful lunch, the fleet of boat captains who got all the kids out fishing, all the mentors who handled worms, fish, and tangled lines, and to everyone who snapped a bunch of photos! Thank you ALL for making it a great day!

We have been blessed by many people, businesses, and organizations who have contributed their time, support and donations for this event throughout the years. Without it, this event would not be possible. Thank you!

2023 Pheasant Shoot

Image 1 of 1

It was a cold, windy, fall day with temps in the low 40s at Howard Reeds Shady Game Farm, but it did not deter 17 youth and many volunteers on Saturday, October 14th as the KAMO Northwoods Chapter held its annual pheasant shoot. We were blessed to have some fantastic dog handlers and dogs join us, Tom McLain and Raider, as well as Dan LaBeske and Echo, to help put up some birds. Members from the 4H group out of Iron Mountain volunteered as well, and assisted with the hunter safety refresher and clay shooting. The kids spent the morning shooting clays, and everyone had an opportunity at a pheasant as well. A bird cleaning demonstration and lunch followed. The clays, ammo, birds, hats, and lunch were all provided at this free annual event. A big thank you goes out to all those who helped make this a great way to get outdoors and enjoy the fall season! This event would not be possible without the hands and hearts of many volunteers. We would also like to give a big thanks to Howard Reed, Tom McClain, Dan LaBeske, Tony Erickson, Alex Erickson, Matthew Johnson and Chris Boor. Thank you all for all your help and support!

Special shout out and thank you to Alex Erickson for putting together some drone footage from the hunt – thank you for your time and the awesome footage! (Click link below)

Ice Fishing:

On Saturday, February 18th, the KAMO Northwoods Chapter hosted an ice fishing event on Lake Emily, held in conjunction with Leffs annual Florence County Waters Fishing Derby. It was a gorgeous winter day, full of smiles, food, sunshine and lots of fish! We had a great turnout of young kids, some of which got to experience ice fishing for the very first time. They were able to get up close and personal with all the gear, and be as hands on as they wanted! It was a great success thanks to all of our volunteers and donors making the event possible!

And a big thanks to Tina Johnson for all the great photos!
