KAMO June 2019 Newsletter

Hello KAMO members,

This is KAMO President Mark Walters with my part of The Newsletter

First, I urge you to take the time to look at the KAMO website and go to  the new video section and check out a recent recognition and video filmed by Channel 19 out of La Crosse.  Mike was honored with the Jefferson Award and was given an excellent interview by a local tv station on his work with KAMO.  Also Mike recently spent a day in Hokah, Minnesota where he has been working with some folks on a kids day and they had 101 participants show up.

Hokah is a short distance across the river from LaCrosse and though there is not an immediate plan, it could be the location of another KAMO Chapter.   Congrats Mike Brown, we could use a dozen more of you in KAMO.

I recently spent 3 days fishing with Jeff Rouse on Green Bay. As Jeff informed us last winter this year along with Patti they will be cooking half of the meals for The Joe, not all of them as they have in the past. I believe AJ said in the past that he could figure out the rest but we are going to have to come up with a plan if you know what I mean.

This past week, this weekend and and next weekend KAMO Chapters will be having picnics, camping and an annual Hooked on Fishing event.

We continue to introduce and help keep our youth in the outdoors and I want to thank all of you for what you do!

There have been about 300 views to the site the past 30 days. Please consider going through the site once in a while, especially your chapter?s page, to check for accuracy. If you see mistakes, you can either clean them up yourself or ask me to. Do you have your activities posted there?

KAMO Promotions

A woman from Clark County has inquired about starting some KAMO activity there and she has been sent some materials. There was a channel 19 t.v. broadcast of an event in Hokah, Mn. during the week of June 24th. The broadcast was initially set up because Mike from Coulee was presented the t.v. station?s award for volunteerism in the area. Mike would like to make clear that like other recognition, it is the effort of the chapter?s members collectively that have led to Coulee?s accomplishmnents. When such a positive image of the group is projected via media, good things will generally follow. One thing I?ll mention is that the Best Dam Fishing Float offered to take a group of kids and mentors free of charge for an outing there and this float is boarded from Houston County, an area we are trying to do a few activities in.

Baraboo

The Baraboo River chapter did double duty on June 12 by combining our monthly meeting and a kids fishing night. We took 6 kids to Devil’s Lake, and although it was raining off and on, we still had a good time with one young lady catching her first fish ever. We just completed our annual camping trip by going to Juneau County Park on June 21-23. We took 6 kids for a weekend of swimming, boating, campfires, dutch oven cobbler, and even homemade ice cream. Although the forecast called for a rainy weekend, the weather cooperated with great temperatures and enough wind to keep the mosquitoes away. We are going to get together with the Lake Wisconsin chapter in July and August for a couple of fishing outings. We will be having our next meeting at Kevin Seymour’s house on July 9 as our normal meeting spot is too busy during the summer months.

Tradition Forward.

Rick

Coulee Chapter

Coulee held its 3P in a new location because of high water. Bikes were ridden on Fisherman?s Road, then putin the trailer. Next, canoes were boarded from the Black River Beach to Shenanigans. Once the canoes were loaded back on a trailer, the participants walked across the street to Olivette church where there was a lunch waiting. The rain held off until just after we finished and during the outing there were very pleasant conditions.

The Hokah KIds Day was a first time event with new people involved and thus took a lot of planning. A few pick up truck loads of both new and used outdoor gear were delivered to the Hokah City Center. North American Squirrel gave us their used Zebco rod and reel combos – 48 to give away. When the day came, 33 families came in. Five mentors and nine volunteers managed an archery station, art,a gear and fish tackle give away, and food inside. A local conservation came to the parking lot with an air boat adjacent to a fish casting game. It was evident that careful planning and preparation can result in a great first time event even in a new location and with entirely new participants. The total was 101 people from those 33 families.

Mike attended a meeting of the Friends of the Mississippi group to provide updates of KAMO?s latest and to listen to what that group had to say. The group discussed how much harder it has become to find volunteers, even after a volunteer drive event they held last year. One of these people came in and helped setup and run the Hokah Day. We hope to partner with this group to some extent.

Note to the Public

Did you know that every chapter can use volunteer help and you don't have to become a full fledged mentor to be one? Chapters often have group outings where help is needed chaperoning, demonstrating, cooking, and other. Contact a chapter in your area for details.

Would your community benefit from having a KAMO chapter? KAMO has an offer to provide technical, material, and financial support to newly formed chapters. If you contact Mike - brownmtjc@gmail.com, he can get you some information about that. There is a growing recognition that time spent outdoors is very beneficial to physical and mental health and our children are not getting out there.

Another way to help a KAMO chapter is by donating gently used items such as hoodies, boots, jackets, coats, camoflage or orange clothing, fishing poles and tackle, or anything you or your loved ones no longer have a use for and our kids need. I have learned not to wonder where all this donation stuff is going to go - it is amazing how quickly the pile goes down.

If you have something the KAMO group can use as a raffle or silent auction item, that is yet another way the public can help us.

Simply go into the Wisconsin Chapters page to find a contact for the chapter nearest you.

Mike Brown
